Description

Originating from the same family as the common Giant Beetle that are oft found across The Lost Land, this subspecies is well known for three traits. Their brilliant red shells that are often used for jewelry, dyes, and medicines, their aggressive demeanor, and their acidic spray.

History

Ruby Beetles while not rare, are less common than the typical Giant Beetles. This could be due to their increased aggression making them a higher priority for hunters or city guards to deal with. They can be found in similar locations as Giant Beetles, and often prefer warmer environments, such as the warm tunnels of an underground cave that has a magma flow.

Behavior

The behaviors and preferred habitat of Ruby Beetles is similar to other subspecies of Giant Beetles. As they are often located inside caves, often preferring warmer climates, and spend most of their energy tending to their brood, only going out to hunt or scout for resources. However, they are more aggressive than the typical Giant Beetles found across many areas of The Lost Lands, and thus are more commonly found hunting live prey instead of scavenging flora. As a result, they are more likely to attack unfortunate individuals.

Furthermore, one of the most dangerous aspects of this subspecies is that they have evolved the ability to spray an acidic mucus from their abdomen. This acid can be irritating and cause chemical burns if left untreated, but the real danger comes from having multiple beetles spraying; causing severe burns that require medical treatment.

Battle Stratagem and Threat Level

Similarly to the common Giant Beetle, a singular Ruby Beetle is not extremely threatening on its own, assuming great care and attention is given. However, due to their acidic spray, it is recommended to gain some distance and use a low powered firearm such as the numerous pistols found across numerous nations. Finally, while dangerous, it is possible for a skilled hunter to close the distance and use either a bladed or blunt weapon.
